This is a miniature portrait painting of Madame de Pompadour. The composition depicts her seated in a chair, gazing to the left while holding a book, with a table behind her holding a couple of leather-bound books. Madame de Pompadour was the chief mistress of King Louis XV of France and a major patron of the arts, known for her influence on French culture and style in the 18th century. The painting is set in a brown and gold frame with a red velvet mat bordered by a brass rim surrounding the painting. It is covered with convex glass and is signed, though the signature is partially hidden by the brass frame. The frame also features a top hanger with two small decorative figures.
