French Hand-painted Enamel Opera Glasses
This is a late 19th century French kiln fired enamel opera glasses. It features a brass base with mother of pearl eyepieces. The body is decorated with hand painted portraits of a young man and young lady along with flowers and birds. The writing on the mother of pearl has faded with age, and there is slight cracks and a tiny chip on the enamel body. The brass has also developed a natural patina over time.
Opera glasses like these were commonly used in French theaters, opera houses, and formal social gatherings, allowing viewers to observe performances and stage details from a distance. The center knob works properly to adjust the eyepieces. It is perfect to style on a stack of books, in a cabinet, or on a shelf.
