This vintage jewelry box comes from the island of Murano, Italy, the center of Venetian glassmaking for over 700 years. Murano’s reputation began in the late 1200s when the Venetian Republic moved glassmakers to the island to protect the city from fire. Since then, artisans have developed techniques like aventurine, millefiori, and clear glass that are admired worldwide.
This vintage piece is attributed to Alessandro Mandruzzato, a fourth-generation Murano glassmaker. It is made of thick glass and possibly 24k gold-plated brass fittings, which show slight patina spots in some areas due to age and use. There are no chips or cracks. On the front of the casket, just beneath the lower gold rim, there is a subtle maker’s mark in the glass—two small swooped dips where the glass briefly curves inward before returning to a straight line. It works beautifully as a functional jewelry box or as a display piece on a vanity, bookshelf, or side table.
